The Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Health Aden Duale has taken a raft of measures after allegations of Malpractises in Kidney Transplants in Mediheal hospital Eldoret. Among the measures taken include suspending top officials in the Ministry. The actions taken are a response to the gravity of the situation and to safeguard public and the integrity of healthcare system.
What actions has the ministry of health taken
- Suspension of Kidney Transplant Services at all Mediheal Group facilities with immediate effect. This follows credible concerns about ethical violations and breaches in clinical protocol.
- Establishment of an Independent Expert Committee to audit all kidney transplant procedures conducted at Mediheal over the past five years. The committee will assess governance, clinical conduct and patient safety standards and report within 90 days.
- Suspension of Two Key Officials, Dr. Maurice Wakwabubi (Ag. Head, KBTTS) and Dr. Everlyne Chege (technical lead of a 2023 probe), to allow independent investigations without interference or conflict of interest.
- Appointment of Dr. Martin Sirengo as interim head of KBTTS to ensure continuity and oversight during the audit process.
- Moratorium on Licensing Foreign Medical Practitioners, save for those from EAC member states. The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has been instructed to immediately halt new registrations and conduct a full audit of all currently licensed foreign practitioners, with a report due in 90 days.
These measures are necessary to restore order, enforce accountability and reinforce ethical and professional standards within the health sector.
The Ministry will not tolerate practices that undermine the safety and dignity of patients.
