
The Mombasa 11 Storey building that started sinking was today demolished successfully by a controlled blast.
Multi-agency operation
The building was brought down a few minutes to 1pm after combined efforts from the Kenya Defense forces, Mombasa County government, Ministry of interior, ministry of public works and ministry of lands together with the private sector.
Use of dynamite to blast
The operation of demolishing the building was by use of a controlled blast which involves the use of dynamite mixed with other chemicals to cause a blast and bring down the building.
Cause for demolition
The building was marked for demolition after it started sinking causing one fatality. initial reports indicate that the building was approved for 6 flours but later they applied for an extension to the early approval thus compromising the structural design of the building.
Consequences of the demolition
During the demolition, businesses within that region were brought to a standstill stopping economic activities. There were also reported destruction of several neighboring buildings where windows were shuttered and others witnessed destroyed walls of their buildings.
